Thoughtful Thursday: We Don't Value Social Media

I really don't mean to always come back and talk about how you must be consistent and accountable when using social media, but it seems to be something that even I have a hard time doing. You see I had made a task for myself to spend a couple hours a week writing a blog post on the Motion Media blog and as you can see, I dropped the ball on that one.

The Problem

Like many other people, my days have gotten busier. I have more to do and I have more tasks on my plate. This is the same type of situation I hear from many people I work with. They don't have the budget to have a dedicated social media person, but they are also too busy to do it themselves. It is an endless loop than many are stuck in.

Value It

Although many don't have the time for social media, I think the issue is more it is not valued as much as it should be. I have come across many who know they should use social media in their business, but don't feel they should give it 100% or they believe it is just like traditional marketing. This is a a big no no. To succeed with social media effects, it needs to be treated as a real aspect of your business. It may not have an actual dollar value, but there is a time investment if you want to see results.

The Solution

One of the best ways to help yourself become a social media user is to have a strategy made up. These strategies are customized to you and your business. Normally you would work with someone like myself and determine such things as who you want to appeal to, what to talk about and your goals.

Having a strategy in place can be one of the most beneficial documents in your social media efforts. Not only does it work as a guideline for social media use, but it also solidifies your determination with your social media efforts.

So before you start up your Facebook Page, step back and think about how you are going to approach it. Will you have enough time, what do you want to accomplish, etc. If you need help, give me a shout and I will be more than happy to help you figure it out.
